Priyanka Chopra’s mother thinks nepotism word was coined by ‘frustrated people’

Actor Priyanka Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, linked nepotism in the film industry to ‘frustrated people’. The physician was speaking on a YouTube show when she mentioned that people have to have talent if they want to survive in the industry, even if they belong to a film family.
Chopra, during her appearance on YouTube channel Breaking Stereotypes, said, “When you bring in talent, merit, then you can’t talk about nepotism. It has been going on for generations in every industry. You would want to give the same opportunities to whom you love. Every parent thinks that way.”
She added that everyone has a responsibility to identify and polish their talent, irrespective of their backgrounds. Dr Madhu Chopra also shared that people don’t usually invest money in someone who is talentless. She continued, “But your responsibility is to hone their talent to deserve that place. Undeserving people get thrown out, nepotism doesn’t last. Nobody will put money on you if you are somebody’s son. You have to have talent. I feel nepotism is a word coined by frustrated people who don’t see this.”
Her statement comes a month after Priyanka spoke at length about how she feared nepotism during her initial days in the Indian film industry, and started making careful choices accordingly. In her podcast with Dax Shepard on YouTube, the former Miss World, in fact, credited her mother for opening her eyes and pushing her to look out for more revenue-based opportunities.
The actor mentioned that the reason she decided to produce films was because her mother reminded her of how the film industry treats female actors of a certain age. She said on the podcast, “I was panicked, and my mom was panicked. She came to me, and she goes, ‘You know you are going to be 30 soon’. I said ‘Yeah’. She is like, ‘You know that is old in this industry.
They want to work with 20-year-olds, so you need to think of a revenue stream if you are going to sustain yourself’. My mom is a business girl. She was thinking ahead. It is so sad that she had to come and tell me at my ripe old age of 30 that my career would not be the same. But it was a fact and I got into production because of that concern, actually.”
She went on to talk about not coming from a film background. Priyanka shared, “I was terrified when those six movies did not do well because I’m not a nepo baby. I didn’t have that kind of support which exists in a big way in Bollywood movies. They are multi-generational actors that come in and get multiple opportunities vs the ones that come in from outside. You don’t have your uncle making a new movie for you just because your last one tanked.”
Priyanka is currently in Mumbai as part of her chairperson duties for MAMI (Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image) Film Festival. The latest edition of the festival will begin from October 19, Saturday, and will conclude on October 24, Thursday.
